The Human Chair is a short story written and illustrated by Japanese manga artist Junji Ito. It was first published in 1994 in the horror manga collection "Flesh-Colored Horror." The story revolves around a lonely and reclusive furniture craftsman who hides inside a chair he made in order to experience the sensation of being sat on.
The story takes a dark turn when a young woman named Yoshiko unknowingly purchases the chair and begins to confide in it, believing it to be an inanimate object. The chair, still inhabited by the craftsman, becomes obsessed with Yoshiko and begins to manipulate events in order to get closer to her.
The Human Chair explores themes of obsession, isolation, and the blurring of the line between reality and fantasy. It is considered one of Junji Ito's most unsettling and eerie works, known for its chilling atmosphere and psychological horror elements.
